Atbara is an important city in the Sudan that is both a railway and river junction. However this location is in South Africa and is a railway junction just outside Bethlehem, which is (or was) a substantial railway centre in the Free State province. The main line continues on to Harrismith and then Ladysmith in KwaZulu-Natal, while the branch heads to Balfour North on the Johannesburg to Durban main line. This picture shows one of the impressive home signal brackets that used to grace many parts of South Africa, but are now very rare.
The signal box had 48 levers. I believe this area is now controlled by radio communication, but the pictures on this page were taken by Greg Hart in 2003.
