Athlone is on the Cape Flats suburban line some 10 kms from Cape Town. Although no mechanical signalling remains here, this station is still of interest as it retains two signal boxes, now performing other functions. This is the first signal box; the front of the station building, which is now part of the ticketing area.

At some stage this separate box was built, with 48 levers controlling goods sidings and a loop platform on this double tracked suburban section. These have all gone now, with CTC taking over around 1997, but the box seems to be used as a meeting area for employees of the suburban rail service.
