Port Elizabeth is the third largest port in South Africa and an important railway centre for importing mining and agricultural output. The area was also known for the last steam-hauled suburban train service, with steam-hauled trains to Uitenhage lasting into the 1980s. Semaphores around the main station are long gone, but this stunning July 1958 picture (taken by, and copyright CP Lewis) shows the huge gantry of signals that used to grace the station area.
