Riversdale is on the Cape Town to Port Elizabeth "Garden Route" secondary line. In days gone by, it was an important staging point, as it was the boundary between the Cape Western and Cape Midlands regions, and engines were changed here. Semaphore signalling, with a 20 lever frame, survived here until 1992, when the line was converted to radio operation. The former signalling area, in front of the station building, still survives in reasonable condition in this July 2007 picture by Dylan Knott.
