Suurbekom is on the West Rand, near the town of Westonaria on a single track section between Midway and Bank that still sees some suburban trains and has two semaphore locations, here and Westonaria. The signalling area in the station building, which has 24 levers, is shown here.

Home signals at Suurbekom. Graham Gillitt took the first two pictures on this page.

Twenty years have passed since the old South African Railways (SAR) became Spoornet (and more recently, Transnet Freight Rail), yet a number of Class 6E1 electrics remain in their original SAR red livery with yellow striping. It was a real bonus to get two of them working the Cape Town - Johannesburg "Premier Classe" train, seen here departing Suurbekom and passing the home signal for westbound trains. 26 July 2009.
