SYDENHAM

Port Elizabeth is the third largest port in South Africa and an important railway centre for importing mining and agricultural output. The area was also known for the last steam-hauled suburban train service, with steam-hauled trains to Uitenhage lasting into the 1980s. Sydenham was the second station out on the suburban line as well as the main line to Johannesburg. This 1978 photo by Richard Niven records the signal box, now long gone.
