Vondeling is on the famous "garden route" line between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. It is notable at being at the north end of the Toorwaterskloof pass, where the line passes through the Swartberg in a narrow ravine between towering mountains. This isolated location once was a manned station with semaphores, but these were removed around 1979. However the station building and signalling area is still intact in this 1989 picture by Richard Niven during the Kei Explorer steam tour.
